Supportive psychotherapy is an individual talk therapy focused on identifying the strengths and weakness of a client’s self-care, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships; and then encouraging maintenance of their strengths and offering psychoeducation and guidance around their weaknesses in order to improve overall functioning and mental well-being. The focus is on listening, validation, positive encouragement with a long term goal to change and improve functioning. Techniques from psychodynamic, interpersonal and cognitive behavioral therapies may all be used.
