Welcome! My name is Dr. Amber Johnson and I am a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist. I am also a board-certified adult psychiatrist. I was born and raised in Eden Prairie, MN, and attended medical school at Creighton University in Omaha, NE prior to completing my adult psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the University of Iowa. I returned to MN in 2016 and worked as a child and adolescent psychiatrist for Allina Health prior to practicing at Choices Psychotherapy. In my free time, I enjoy going for walks with my dog, spending time with my family, playing board games, needle felting, cooking, and watching Netflix.
I enjoy working with children and adolescents as they are growing and developing each day. They are full of potential.
As a board-certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, I work with young people to help them overcome any challenges they face regarding emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. In doing so, I foster resilience and assist them in reaching their full potential. The best part of my job is coaching young people in the development and utilization of healthy skills for managing life stressors, while watching them grow into well-adjusted adults.
In my practice, I offer the advantages of a medical education for providing whole person care. I take into account the physical, genetic, developmental, emotional, cognitive, educational, spiritual, family, peer, and social components of an individual when collaborating with them in the creation of a treatment plan to maximize their mental health and wellbeing.
I utilize a variety of treatment approaches including psychotherapy, medication management, and complementary medicine, used individually or in combination. I also consult and partner with families and social supports, other physicians, and professionals from schools and community organizations in order to serve as an advocate for the best interests of children, adolescents and young adults.
