Affirmations for Stress Management

Clients at Choices Psychotherapy are no strangers to the need for stress management. Sometimes they come to us after failing to see results on their own, or to ask if they’re on the right track. We can’t be with our clients all the time and yet have a few suggestions up our sleeves for them to try on their own. One of these is affirmations.

Our clients have experienced a lot of success with affirmations. “When I looked in the mirror every morning and repeated the same phrase, I really started to believe what I was telling myself.” People use affirmations for all sorts of reasons. Self esteem, motivation, inspiration, they’ve proven effective in many different circumstances. Since they’re often used to enhance our positivity, they often get overlooked as a means of stress management.

Many individuals have seen both short term and long term success from using affirmations regularly. Just saying one of your choice phrases out loud can be enough to calm your heart rate and ground you right in the moment, and incorporating them into your daily routine can even enhance your quality of life over time. Looking in front of the mirror while talking to yourself can feel awkward and uncomfortable, so keep at it for a while. The amount of time it takes for this type of life change to take effect varies from person to person, so don’t give up if you don’t feel it working right away.

We’ve collected some of our favorite affirmations for stress management to help you get started. Feel free to tweak them to your specific needs, or even come up with your own.

  • I am confident
  • My mind and body are at peace
  • I gently release my worries, doubts, and fears
  • I am positive
  • My mind is calm
  • I am free to be myself

Try pairing your affirmations with some of these other stress management tactics. Getting regular exercise, deep breathing exercises, and meditation have all proven effective in a variety of cases. The ability to meditate allows individuals to clear their mind of unnecessary clutter and let go of thoughts that are harming us. More often than not, distress comes from fixating on the past or worrying about the future. One of the best ways of coping with stress is to focus all your energy on staying in the present moment.

Stress management is a marathon, not a sprint. The professionals at Choices will work with clients to determine a course of therapy that works for each unique individual.
